Indeed marriage was to us a descent into a crypt where, by the tremulous light of smoking torches, there was celebrated a glorious rite of a sacrificial nature. Of course it was beautiful, we saw that. But we meant to stay in the sunlight, and we knew of no end which we could serve by offering ourselves up as a sacrifice.

The continual insistence that Rosamund and Richard Quin cannot marry due to her being older than him puzzles me--women did sometimes marry younger men in the past, just as they do today. The fact that they're apparently first cousins is what makes their possible union uncomfortable for me, but it doesn't seem to be so for anyone else.

The brutal rejection of what did not please is actually a tender concern for what would not be cherished. This is an unusual way of rendering kindness that requires more than goodness to understand its meaning. A truly profound insight that somehow recognizes the painful blow of reality as it acknowledges the intractable truth in an unerring manner.
