First thoughts: this reminds me of the movie The Butterfly Effect with Ashton Kutcher, but taking place in the Antebellum South, and the book was written in the 1970s I believe, so no contamination of modern-day slang or tech mentioned, which I've noticed a lot in newer publications. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it's refreshing reading older books because of it.

A time travel sci fi feels more my speed. But I'm about to witness a terrible time in history, and I don't have the stomach for it right before I sleep. Butler's writing is very evocative.

i am currently having a tough time with this! goes to show how our reading taste can change. in 2010ish, i couldn’t put this book down and rec’d it to everyone i knew. 2026, i don’t even want to pick it up 😔
the book hasn’t change a lick, but i sure have. i think coming off my emma m. lion foray i am just in the mood for something lighter. the content here is *heavy* and i’m just not in that space.
