"Soon after 1702 the available land about Germantown had largely been taken up, which necessitated the establishing of a second Mennonite colony along Skippack Creek, a tribu tary of the Perkiomen, about 30 miles above German town...called Skippack...begun by a Germantown colonist and several of his fellow immigrants a little later, became the center of a flourishing colony of Palatine Mennonites."

"...the first German colony in America was founded at Germantown in 1683.* The first settlers came from Crefeld and the surrounding regions along the lower Rhine near the Dutch border, and consisted of one Mennonite and twelve Mennonite-Quaker families, all with Dutch names."
