I appreciate that even with everything going on, he hasn't forgotten his little sister. She's still a priority.

Is this the purge? Why are the adults so gung-ho to shoot kids?
Are we drawing parallels between kids and hunting dogs? Is it a metaphor for teen hood? Or just a commentary on human morality when there are no consequences to our actions?
Or just gore for gore's sake?

Adults clearly aren't all that scared of the October Boy if they're just out on the street. Which has pretty strong implications.
The Run is only for males (and I have my suspicions on why, which I've already explained).

Apparently, no one gives 2 shts if any of these kids die, considering the butcher just wasted one over raw meat. Which is bizarre because we're almost biologically hardwired to protect our young and insure our species' future.
Which means there's gotta be a pretty big motivator for this ritual. Probably greed. But possibly also something will collect on this deal?

This is what happens when you skimp on the lore.
Why do we starve the kids? Is it a parallel to something? A metaphor?
Why do we way the October Boy down in candy specifically? Pumpkin is edible. These are kinda weak ideas without lore or underlining meaning.
Who makes the rules? The October Boy can win the Run? For conflict purposes or is there an actual reason for this.

We needed a girl to balance out some of this testosterone.
I feel bad that the books I've read in horror (predominantly male) have led me to assume the worst for all books in the genre. I just assumed that there would either be no woman in this, or they'd be there to emotionally or physically abuse for the plot. 😬

I have a theory.
I've had this theory since the October Boy was first introduced as an idea.
I think the October Boy is the winner of the previous year's run. That they never actually leave town, that's just what people are told. But in actuality, they become next years sacrifice for a good harvest.
Think that one episode of Supernatural with the Scarcrow diety in the apple orchard.

Smart move. Illuminating 1 target without getting your hands dirty while emotionally crippling the other 2.
Well sht, I didn't realize Mitch actually cared about his friends. He was giving Disney Channel bully vibes. But fck, that actually makes it kinda sad that he killed his friend.

I know we're going for a certain style, but I really wish the author would quit addressing the reader.
It really takes you out of the story, and then you have to work to find the flow again. Which is already difficult with the 'I'm hip. I can hang with the kids,' slang the author keeps swinging around with wild abandon.

I'm not sure this writing style is going to be for me. It's kinda choppy, which messes with the pacing. It's fast pace, but glosses over interesting lore. It keeps addressing the reader, which ruins the immersion. And it reads like that meme of that old guy dressed like he's from the 90s saying 'I'm no with the kids. I'm cool, dawg.' It's a little cringe, but it's older too, so..

Oh my goodness. Norman Partridge uses so many adjectives, similes, and metaphors, it’s like walking through mud with your moon boots on.

This novella is a Supernatural episode on LSD with religious fanaticism. This is a damn wild ride. I love it. Give me more.

I was lost at a few moments in this book. Maybe it would make more sense if I was reading the physical book but the audio book. I liked this book I won’t lie. It changes the focus on characters and gives new information at decent times. The concept of the book is really cool
