The argument that Haugen presents is not a question of “Will God bring justice?” but rather, “Will [I] God’s people answer answer the call to bring justice to this world?”

“By some great mystery and enormous privilege, God has chosen to use his people, empowered by his Spirit, to complete this task.”
— echoes my feelings about the question I ask, “why me?” when thinking about why God chooses to accomplish his works through us when he doesn’t need us— it’s a great mystery!

Great so far...challenging. Both daughter and her boyfriend read it in an ethics class.

If people have no respect for God, no love for their Maker, I would ask the question another way: Why not pillage, rape, persecute and murder? If it feels good, and they can get away with it, why not? If God is dead or does not exist, as these people believe, why are not all things permitted? Why should they restrain themselves? Because it’s just wrong? Because it’s not the way civilized people behave?

The main idea is our greatest witness of Jesus to the world is standing for justice. While justice is a good and important virtue, reading a book devoted to defending it in a time period in which individuals are devoted to social justice projects and easily enraptured with causes is not as challenging as I would have hoped. However, I can't just start a book and not finish it.

The church is now moving beyond offering assistance to the poor and needy to actually combating the forces of evil directly.

None of this seems new, but I'm wondering if that's from reading IJM's updates for the last 10 years.

some stronger, deeper statements than I had remembered. still an easy, smooth read, and still a strong call to action... and I'm still going :)

I've read about halfway through this one several times - still think John Stott's 'Human Rights, Human Wrongs' is better, but this has some really important stuff and it goes beyond the theory to the actuality of the work - for my list it's my light read about a weighty topic. IJM's work is pretty impressive.
