The people had been literate, for there were rows of books upon the shelves; but books went to dust when they were touched, and one could do no more than wonder at the magic words they held.

'Night Fear' by Frank Belnap Long. Not a novelet by any stretch, a very short short story. About how adults try to protect their children from unpleasant realities, & how miserably they fail, but instead create nameless fears. Supposed to be a surprise ending, but meh.
'I Am Tomorrow' by Lester del Rey. This one has aged well, a classic about time travel & the attempt to change the future by changing the past.

Reading this side-by-side w/recent issues of Asimov's...interesting to compare classics against current short stories, what their concerns/fears are. Some excellent stories in this collection. "Ultrasonic God" has not aged well, but "The Chapter Ends" is great. "A' as in Android" is a classic infiltration/invasion story I enjoyed.
