"What in the blazes was that about?" Yes, what was that about, because I couldn't understand a thing that old grandma was saying 😣

Love!
I really like the dynamic between our main characters and their positions in the community.

very interesting plot; I like the characters already and being so close to home I feel a special connection to the story and the setting. It is kind of hard to understand the Gullah dialogue from Nana Jean but I work through it. My grandmother's name is Barbra Jean and I am named after her so I also feel a special connection to Nana Jean :)

A few books I've read this year I felt were too long for what they were going for. I think this one is too short. It could've used about 100-150 pages more, because the pacing feels too fast at places.
I really enjoy the whole lore, though. It's fun. Kinda reminds me of DOOM, with all the monster talk and some more stuff later into the story.

Very interested so far. I'm not sure if I'm entirely HOOKED yet, but I'm certainly intrigued. I appreciate the unique prose, which—I'll admit—did take me a bit to get used to. I really like the horror—though it doesn't scare me, per se—it makes me feel quite uneasy. I am very excited to see what is to come, and I believe this novel will prove to be a great read to start the new year.

I don’t know how many times I’ve picked this up and put it back down, but I am determined to see it through this time.
I love P. Djèlí Clark’s writing, but I’ve realised that I’ve been avoiding books with painful topics this year. With the world feeling so dark, I’ve found myself retreating into fantasy and lighter fiction instead.
