Transition is another trap of the wide-reaching industries of assimilation, one that successfully captures many of the female hold-outs unconvinced by more mainstream treadmills of "beauty" and bodily "self-improvement" ... The concept of a "life-saving" makeover is not a new one to women in the west. Entire businesses and TV shows are devoted to it.

this is compelling as personal narrative but the author has a tendency to make broad sweeping statements based almost entirely on her own experiences which a few times has made me go, “I can think of two or three counter examples just out of the smallish number of people I personally know,” which does blunt the intended effect.
