“A universe doesn’t die like a person. It’s not light fading from a cage of blood and bone. It’s billions of years of starfire and wonder.”

There was no way the world could possibly end among things like these, was there? I thought back to Crow’s weird lecture about being locked in the trunk of a car. At least in that scenario you knew where you stood. There was something about considering an apocalyptic event while standing in the middle of a Starbucks staring at a banana nut muffin that felt sadly unreal.

And then I was somewhere I didn’t recognize—or rather, I was nowhere.
I had the strange feeling that I was stuck, hovering in between places, straddling some kind of line, and I wasn’t able to tell which side of that line was mine, or exactly how many sides of the line there actually were.
I had no idea where I belonged. It was horrible, feeling completely alone and untethered, but it wasn’t a new feeling.

He doesn’t make it more than two steps before he runs into part of the darkness that has been slowly seeping into the room.
As he lunges forward, something happens.
The lower part of his body becomes stuck immediately, but the top continues to move, stretching unnaturally as his momentum carries him forward.

“What I’m talking about is feeling like the world around you is slowly forgetting the world you know, one tiny piece at a time.”

I knew that it was wrong, but I climbed down and entered the forbidden world.
And I was suddenly somewhere else.
It felt like magic.
Walking through the halls of school after hours was like descending into a shadow version of my own world. In this new place, things existed in a different state of being. It was as if everything was suspended there somehow, inactive until the bells rang at the start of September.

As I stood there, a wet cold entered my body from somewhere deep beneath the ground and moved slowly up my legs, eventually clouding its way into my head. I tried to call out for help, but my mouth was suddenly filled with coarse black hair that tasted like the sour musk of an oily animal from the sea.

And at that point I felt something moving forward from within the swirling darkness like a wave. This wave was darker than everything around it—and I understood that, whatever this thing was, it was going to completely erase me from the world.

How do you play the game? Find the discrepancies, follow the clues; follow the clues and find the discrepancies. Playing is the easy part; what’s harder is knowing if you’re playing or not. There’s no entry fee, application form, or guidebook, and whoever’s in charge isn’t talking. So how do you know if you’re playing the game?

Cold War films and literature from the 1980s posited a world where videogames intersected with the real world, where these games might actually train future operatives to deal with potentially dangerous scenarios like global-scale war or national security–threatening espionage.
The possibility that a game like this actually existed—a game that took place using the real world as its playing field—was intoxicating.
