“You know, from years of practice with Jenny, how to shape your expression in a way that reassures her. You know how it’s supposed to look. Love. You slip it on.”

I appreciated how the story moved between different characters’ perspectives, revealing the crime and the consequences of it. The countdown leading up to the execution added a little intensity at the end. I thought the author handled the emotional complexity around murder and the death penalty well. It didn’t necessarily challenge me, but it did make me reflect. Lavender’s avoidance was frustrating!

its mentioned that the lawyer looked at the photos of the girls Ansel murdered and looked sickened at what he did. they're just bones when they're found? you can't tell what he did. they're bones. the medical examiner looking at the bones, he mentions the dental records haven't come back yet for all 3. he then mentions a break on an arm bone. one of the murdered girls broke her arm. suddenly that's an ID for all 3??

Reading for Pie Book Club, but despite the great reviews, I have no interest. Now I’m about a third of the way through and it’s just dark, and kinda gross, and I’m not thrilled with finishing. Considering skipping the Ansel chapters.

The beginning of this book failed to grab me, but I kept on and was hooked after Lavender’s telling of her hellish life as a new mother in the second chapter! Omg the FOX. Layla’s RING! Saffron’s come back story!
Ansel Packer. Tragic. Deplorable. He is deeply psychotic, which based on his childhood no kidding.
