I’ve been evangelical about Manohla Dargis since reading her film reviews in the early 90s in the LA Weekly, so I’ll come as no surprise that her in depth, insightful writing in this slim volume was extremely engaging. I’m more of an Elroy fan than a Hanson fan (I mean, who isn’t?), but this made me more interested in him, and did what some other BFI books haven’t done: made me want to see the film again.

Insightful about how Ellroy and Hanson created this Hollywood backdrop out of their own memories.

A critical analysis of one of my all-time favourite movies. Looking forward to the rest. (Already read the one about The Usual Suspects!)
