Lots to think about!
At this point it's clearer that the point of speculating about distant planets is to escape from reality. A prominent theme has been the negative influence of humanity on everyone else / other living things, so maybe a distant world untouched by man could be more appealing than Earth? Maybe the upsetting part of being "alone" in the universe is like losing hope of there being a better world?
