Het is een goed boek maar het is lang geleden dat ik een boek heb gehad wat me zoveel moeite kostte om doorheen te ploegen.

Orwell's description of the proles is the least persuasive element of 1974,it is hardly credible that a regime obsessed with absolute control would allow 85% of the population to lie beyond the reach of the Tought Police & telescreens, not that the proles would be immune to doublethink. You can't have totalitarianism without the masses. The world of the proles is a caricature of capitalism rather like [Huxley]

“as time goes on and the horrors pile up…” orwell u do not even know how applicable this phrase is still today

I've actually never read any of Orwell's books lol

It’s like Room 101 in here. Big Brother is watching to make sure I don’t falter in my enthusiasm for Brexit. Books like this would be banned in the world that the fascists want to create. The spirit of Orwell lives on.

Old fear, no closer: ‘As early as 1949, Tribune had tied its review of Nineteen Eighty-four to a news item about the ominous implications of a new mechanical “brain” developed at Manchester University.’

‘All prophecies are fiction until they come true.’

‘But the equally left-wing Noam Chomsky maintained that Orwell sided with “the common man” against “repressive powers” so “the idea that his writings should be used for anti-communist ideology would have been horrifying to him. At least I find it horrifying.”’ It has some grounding in that Orwell would have found the creation of a new orthodoxy horrifying, but not because it is anti-communist.

I don't see how Noam Chomsky could have twisted the meaning of Nineteen Eighty-four to the point of implying it's pro-communist, but that's the calibre of mind we're confronting.

The politically mixed adoptions and denunciations of Orwell.

Orwell: ‘To admit that an opponent might be both giveaway and intelligent is felt to be intolerable.’

‘Orwell visualised racial prejudice as a nerve that might go unnoticed until it was prodded.’
