This book is a nonfiction account by an East African explorer by the name of Thompson. Thompson is a very good example of cultural differences between the 19th century and today. Most striking is how little he makes of what would be today serious crimes, such as hijacking a ship early in the book (it made sense in context) or tracking down the family of a deserter and selling them into slavery.
