This story has turned out to be like a brother story to my own

Alright, this book has become very hard to put down, and I dare say it makes reading the first two (rated 3 stars and 1 star respectively) in the series worth all the trouble, as it’s finally starting to bring all that context together into a gripping narrative.

I don’t know why I have such a hard time concentrating on Vandermeer’s writing. I find myself reading and rereading pages, I catch my mind wandering, even though I like his writing and I think the words on the page are objectively good. My brain just slides off the words and none of them stick.

Jeez, Finch cannot catch a break this week, can he? He seems to barely have the energy to react to people threatening him anymore...

A quote on the front calls this “fungal noir”, and that is exactly right: It is a noir detective story set in a decaying city that had been taken over by mushroom people. The vibe reminds me more of China Mieville than the other Vandermeer books I’ve read (though, to be fair, moss and fungi played a role there as well)
