~4 chapters in; they can feel quite lengthy but hwang has lived a storied life and has a very nuanced perspective on the multiple historical events he experienced/historical figures he's met which turns this book into kind of a thought exercise for me as i'm frequently forced to re-examine my initial reaction to things (e.g., hwang's encounter w the leader of jijonpa before his execution).
