Lots more usage of the word c*l*red and also says a character crossed his legs "Indian style". These usages are unnecessary and by this point I can only assume the author enjoys saying these terms and uses writing historical victim as an excuse to do so. Gross!

Now used an ableist slur. Completely unnecessary. What is wrong with this author?

now the author is using the word n*gr*es and it is completely unneccessary and I'm extremely annoyed. This isn't some historical nonfiction with a direct quotation. it is a trifling historical mystery that I would like to enjoy, but keep getting sidetracked by the white author's choice of language inappropriate to the era in which her book is published.

This author sure is big on using slurs against immigrants and people of color (c*l*red, not the n word but still) . Even if something is "historically accurate" doesn't mean it's necessary to include. It's really starting to make me uncomfortable and is certainly taking me out of the story, which is otherwise interesting.

The story is finally taking off. It sounds intriguing.

Miley's style is easy to read. Learning abotu Spiritualism in the 1920s is fun and getting into Chicago Jazz Age is intersting. But 33% into it, I'm quite ready for the story to start.
