Status Updates From Georgiana: Duchess of Devon...

CHAPTER END // I'm woefully behind. I am just now ending Chapter 3 when I should be ending Chapter 5. I shall endeavor to catch up.

I suspect that if I transposed the Whig party of 1770s UK to modern day US, it would be the Libertarian party, given the description written of distrusting strong centralized government and a vigilance over civil liberties.

We learn that Fox, of Georgiana's lover fame -- but not yet, was a Macaroni: a man who was gaudily overdressed, nonsensical in speech, and smiled without mirth. We also learn that he was a gambling addict (as she was, so I can see the attraction) and deeply unattractive. This is in stark contrast to how he is portrayed in the movie.

Wherein we learn that Georgiana invented the game of Charades.

There are just too many people and I cannot keep them all straight. My head whirls.

Wherein we learn that Georgiana and Marie Antoinette were friends and found companionship in their similar married lives.

Wherein we learn the origins of Starbucks.

Wherein our subject changes her name from George-i-ana to George-ayna.

Apparently Sir William Cavendish styled himself with a caduceus and it became the symbol of his house and legacy.

CHAPTER END // That's it for this chapter, but this chapter is for yesterday (I already gave myself credit for it in Habitica). And so on I must read to Chapter 2 for today.

Or I could be wrong. You could just be political set dressing because his heart and loins could be involved with a completely other woman who he is simply unable to marry directly. This feels like ... Prince Charles and Camilla maybe?

Oh honey, you anxiously attached sweetheart. You've ended up with an avoidant one, haven't you? You're about to have a life of anxious-avoidant trap, aren't you?

And after that interminable lesson in British political history all that can be concluded is that Duke Devonshire inherited political clout he did not earn and did not deserve. Moving on ...

Okay. Not to diagnose, but clearly Georgiana has some major anxiety going on first in her anxious attachment/enmeshment with her Mom and then in her fretting over her younger siblings. This was, of course, a time before mental health awareness when she might be given challenges to her thoughts. Given that, I can see why the author might abandon her PhD for Georgiana; anxiously attached seek anxiously attached.

Wherein we learn that the author fell so in love with Georgiana that she gave up her PhD. Yikes. That's a major life change for a dead person.

This is February's Movie Book Club selection. I am starting out reading it as an eBook thanks to Archive.org's lending library. I have ordered a physical copy of the book from Paperback Swap so we shall switch to that once it arrives. Because of the number of chapters in this book and the number of days until Movie Book Club, one chapter a day ought to do it.
