…this was their food as the fish and animals and fruits and berries and seeds were ours. I began to weep at the beauty of this, to say a psalm that Fillan had once taught me praising the good God.

At once I knew that the movement of the blood within me was part of the same pattern that moved the sap in the oak tree to my right. The decay of the food in my stomach was the same as the autumn decay of the plants and trees. When Juniper and I shoveled Earth upon our human droppings, I knew that the flies and the little earth creatures fed upon them;

“ I thought if you were educated, you didn’t have to do boring things,” I said to Juniper the day before.
“There are people who think like that,” Juniper had said. “Such a pity. Boredom is so valuable.” I could not imagine what she meant

“Pelagius? He who thinks we are good entirely by our own endeavors?” Juniper asked. “That man’s a fool.”

My mom gifted me the audio book back in 2015, and I was mesmerized since. I've been trying to find this book for years and got it as a gift this month. I'm happy to find it's just as magical as I remember, maybe even more so now.

I had forgotten about this gem of a book until I rediscovered it in my childhood room recently! I can’t wait to reread it more than 20 years later and experience its quiet magic all over again. 🤩

This was my most favorite book as a child- and reading it again with my daughters is unlocking a core memory for me.

Well. Okay. It's been awhile since I've seen an unironic connection being drawn between red hair and evil and Judas Iscariot.

I know that this is a children's book. My sister (who's 12) borrowed this book from the library and she thought it was a bit of a bore. I must agree with her, it takes me quite a long time to read only 200 pages. But still, the world-building... I love it. In my head, I can quite picture Juniper's house, the garden, her cats, etc. I'm having a good time and I will probably read the sequels as well...

I love this. It's what I wanted when I tried to reread The Mists of Avalon (which didn't suit me in that moment, perhaps another time).

Reading this together with my eleven year old son. It leads to lots of questions. Like: "why did they do what the village priest told them too" and "does Juniper believe in God if she is a witch?" and "this is a made up story because it's about witches but could this sort of thing happen to children in that time?"
