This book is so meandering in a good way

Kind of devastating for me personally. Also stepanova is crazy well read

It immediately captured me with this stunning, short paragraph about what it means to be a hoarder and an obsessive organizer at the same time. Incapable of removing anything, and unable to withstand the clutter, you try fruitlessly to assemble system of organization that will relieve the burden. But, it remains fruitless in reality, but you’re compelled to do it anyways.

This book should have been a solid 100 pages shorter.

I don’t think I’m equal to such a task. I feel confused and overwhelmed by the bewildering jumble of pieces. I don’t know how to make sense of it and I feel I’m going to struggle to finish… Sorry world.

Blurb-y promos like to describe a work as being "in dialogue" with other authors and it's usually quite the overreaching nonsense but this feels legitimately like a contribution to an ongoing discourse on memory and I'm smugly pleased with my decision to pick it up after Gospodinov's Time Shelter.

Break open a notebook at any point and be reminded of your own reality, because a notebook is a series of proofs that life has continuity and history, and (this is most important) that any point in your own past is still within your reach.
