I love books that make me go on little side quests reading the things referenced

"If you stare at David and his trophy for long enough…It is thought that Goliath’s face is that of Caravaggio himself, and it becomes even more fascinating when you look across at the child and it occurs to you that it is in fact a double self-portrait.”

It immediately captured me with this stunning, short paragraph about what it means to be a hoarder and an obsessive organizer at the same time. Incapable of removing anything, and unable to withstand the clutter, you try fruitlessly to assemble system of organization that will relieve the burden. But, it remains fruitless in reality, but you’re compelled to do it anyways.

This book should have been a solid 100 pages shorter.

"Jean Cocteau said that cinema is the only art form that records death at work. Rembrandt's self-portraits are solely occupied with recording death, and lined up together they make a sort of proto-film - whereas the kilometres of selfies, taken and uploaded for communal access, look like the exact opposite to me: the chronicle of death as it walks among us, no longer of any interest to anyone."

I don’t think I’m equal to such a task. I feel confused and overwhelmed by the bewildering jumble of pieces. I don’t know how to make sense of it and I feel I’m going to struggle to finish… Sorry world.

"How much fictionalising or artifice is involved in the process of chronicling an actual event?"
Much to think about. I don't think I answered the question, even. Haha! Damn. Let me end my journey with this book here for now.

This interestingly reads like a non-fiction account but after researching a bit about it, it is a domestic fiction??? Cool.

Ние, миналите и настоящите, сме безкрайно уязвими, безумно интересни, напълно беззащитни. Особено когато вече ни няма.

Blurb-y promos like to describe a work as being "in dialogue" with other authors and it's usually quite the overreaching nonsense but this feels legitimately like a contribution to an ongoing discourse on memory and I'm smugly pleased with my decision to pick it up after Gospodinov's Time Shelter.

Break open a notebook at any point and be reminded of your own reality, because a notebook is a series of proofs that life has continuity and history, and (this is most important) that any point in your own past is still within your reach.

En lukenut loppuun syystä tai toisesta. Alkuasetelma oli kutkuttava, mutta kirja lähti omille mutkikkaalla teilleen.
