"Sredni Vashtar" (1912) by Saki
Perfect intersection between plausible childish imaginative speculation married with the macabre vs. potential supernatural horror. Fun satirical narrative voice in depicting a sickly boy put-upon by his coddling elder cousin/guardian. Hilariously dark ending. Reads somewhat like a Dahl story.

"The Willows" (1907) by Algernon Blackwood
Nicely chilling tale that slowly creeps up on you, mostly through pathetic fallacy transformed into fictional reality. It does drag on a bit after the middle and before the final movement though.

The Screaming Skull (1908) by Francis Marion Crawford
Neat little monologue conveyed to a guest of the narrator that sounds very modern, though overstays its welcome by going over the same things stylistically. Still, even if quaint by modern standards, the idea of a haunted skull screaming bloody murder and crushing unsuspecting and sceptical people's windpipes is fun and, in its way, creepy.

The Other Side (1908) by Alfred Kubin
Loved this little excerpt from the novel, especially how it feels like a proto-ecofiction with how various animals become increasingly aggressive and territorial and take over the City while people are struck down by a sleeping disease.
