In both East & West, not only have attitudes toward Chinese homosexuality changed, but the homosexual tradition itself has been forgotten. What could possibly account for such a monumental shift in morality in such a short time?
Much of the new morality seems to have been derived from the West. Christian missionaries & other moralists had championed a realignment of Chinese sexuality along Western European ideals.

Emigration of Chinese to other places brought with it the export of Chinese homosexual sensibilities... The clash between Chinese and European views of homosexuality led to the arrest of men suspected of homosexuality among the Chinese population of **Manila**. Although the Chinese protested that love between men was an accepted custom in their homeland, the Spanish colonial authorities were intractable.

This simply won’t be for everyone, given it is an academic work dealing with a huge time span. However, the literary and cultural traditions and norms present in dynastic China up until the presence of Colonizing forces really surprised me. Well worth a read for anyone interested in the global perspectives of gay history.
