Beautifully written and thoroughly engaging.

Since I barely started this and have no real energy to finish it at the moment, I'll put a kibosh here and get it back out again for the anniversary of Edward III's death (in late June). Might make that the new standard for historical mysteries.

Started this the other day, been meaning to read more, haven't gotten to it yet.

Great story, wasn't a style of writing I enjoy though.

It's been a long time since I read a medieval mystery and this one seems like another intriguing character.

‘There is something strange,’ he muttered. ‘A merchant is murdered by his servant who then commits suicide. A very neat death, orderly. All the ends tied up like a parcel, a package, a gift for Twelfth Night. Surely two mysteries? The first one is the neatness of the deaths, the second my Lord of Gaunt’s interest in them.

But Springall desired other flesh. He gripped the bed clothes and, at that moment, knew something was wrong. He clutched his throat, but too late. Murder was upon him.

Ehh again Cranston's backstory is kind of tackily put into the story (kind of like "i drink but i have a reason to drink please pity me) and kind of out of place (i don't know, it felt a bit forceful to be honest)

I feel like Athelstan's backstory is presented a bit too early and in a "tacky" way (I feel like it would be better if parts of it were uncovered during the book) and the names of the characters are a bit too stereotypical for medieval religious people lmao

But yeah the writing is honey to my eyes

Früher habe ich die Bücher um Bruder Athelstan und Sir John Cranston wahnsinnig gerne gelesen. Mal sehen, ob's immer noch so ist. :)
