First half felt more pronounced and meaningful than the second half which is reiterating the first chapter. There are some good concepts and practicums, but— as with any self-help book— take it with a grain of salt. You need more than just a book for therapy and healing.

Coping strategies; people pleasing, anger or rage, dissociation- enable us to avoid repeating or reliving past trauma, delaying immediate pain.

“Because if you intuitively know what you need to change for the better- why don’t you do it? It’s not a moral failure; it’s because you’re stuck repeating these more or less automatic behavior patterns.”

AMAZING. A true account of what it takes to grasp real healing in your own way! And it shows attention to parts of mental health that need to change! LOVE

It has been giving me good insight, I think surface level, to understand what I need to take care of my whole entire being to heal. From eating right, exercising, understanding our thought process. I hoped it to be backed with more research but honestly don’t think I’d fully understand that anyways. It is just enough info for getting me to start doing the work.

Early in book she claims that she didn’t see how psychotherapy was helping her patients… then in the book outlines how ill she was mentally/emotionally during her upbringing + during her time as a psychotherapist. Leaves me think she prob wasn’t a good psychotherapist! She was ill so of course her patients weren’t benefiting. Psychotherapy shouldn’t be invalidated just because SHE wasn’t good at it.

This book is riddled with generalized assumptions about the reader. Dr. LePera talks about herself A LOT in this book, so I agree with another reviewer who said the book should be called “How I did the work” instead of “How to do the work.”

So far it’s a book that I have to stop and reread in order to get all of the marvelous points that she is trying to make.

I know this is just more-so an introduction into what holistic psychology is and the models used but before even opening this book I read some of the bad reviews and so far I have to say I disagree. I think there’s EXTREME power is identifying feelings and addressing past traumas, triggers, etc and how harboring these feelings plays a role in your physical health. My therapy journey mimics this- successfully.

Good at a high level, but what the heck is "chilly wetness of my ocean soaked hair". I feel that people who aren't great writers over-describe visualisations and it has me rolling my eyes a little. Also, she's currently on an anti-diagnosis rant. I understand labels can have a negative impact, but sometimes a diagnosis can offer huge relief to an individual. She's givin' off tunnel vision vibes 🤯

I don't think this book is as good as her damn instagram slides. I'll finish it but I don't think it's a great use of time, really her slides are clear cut enough to impact me and the anecdotes and stories feel stiff

When breaking free from the subconscious state we can experience mental resistance that manifests itself in the form of mental and even physical pain. I tend to get headaches when I am conscious in my mind and body for extended periods of time.

Excellent. Diving into parent archetypes and having to go back redigest, process, journal. The piece around being unseen and unheard as a child connecting to the people pleaser punched me in the stomach.

I need to work on thickening my prefrontal cortex and helping my limbic system get sorted. I'm pretty good about being mindful and present when I think to be, but yoga and guided meditations don't do it for me. I simply have to request observance from myself.

You don't really need the Future Self Journal guide from the website when it is right there in the book as its own dedicated section.

The Future Self Journal website is still active at the time of writing this note. However, if you really want to avoid having your email address harvested for marketing purposes (you don't have to confirm addition to the list in order to get access to the document), you can use https://holisticpsych.s3-us-west-1.am... to go directly to the guide.

I relate so much to the author but atop that, I feel as if I'm reading two books in one. The section on the placebo effect and the nocebo effect are like the cliffs notes of the book "Why Woo-Woo Works".
