Mulan began to pull off the tunic.
“This is a cold night for a swim.” A man’s voice…spoke Chinese from among the trees.
Startled, Mulan let the tunic fall again. “Who’s there ”
An old man walked out of the trees.. [H]e carried a peach.
“Merely a hermit.”
“This is no place for a hermit.”
“The water is good—but it is cold for a swim, young mistress.”
Mulan stiffened. “I am Hua Mulan, a soldier of the Khan."

“At each turning of the Great Year,” Atalante said, “those who would be king run a footrace with the queen. Along the way, three golden apples must be snatched up and carried to the finish ahead of the queen.”
“One for the Maiden, one for the Mother, one for the Crone,” Kainios said.
