We’re getting into Quantum Mechanics and my brain hurts. An electron behaves a certain way until it just.. doesn’t? Schrödinger penned a formula for how the state of an electron changes over time (much like the Newtonian force=mass times acceleration). We can make predictions based on this formula for the wave, but we can’t determine exactly were it will go? Yikes

I'm reading two chapters a day to absorb this work fully. Overall, I'm having a great time learning about ontologies, Emergence, and Bayesian ideas. Now we're getting into larger ideas, and Carroll is describing the odds of Theism and Atheism in an expansive sense.

Ch 22

Explores the scientific worldview (laws, inertia, explanation), method (Bayes, epistemology), metaphysics and physics (quantum field theory, the Core Theory), thermodynamics and emergence (chemistry and biology, Friston and Darwin), mind (physicalism vs dualism) and value (metaethics and ethics). So yeah: the big picture of contemporary science and our "default philosophical worldview"! I want a good overview so here

I should read Russell, he sounds like a real Liberation of Night kinda fellow.

I swore a week ago I'd call it a day...and yet, I want the punchline. This is one of those books that leaves me with more books to read since I've not a scientific mind. I feel that Carroll is wrong, however, I've no empirical data to back it up.

Carroll has me wanting to throw in the towel and read someone who isn't such a rooster about his own created theory. How many times does he talk about the fact that something cannot be proven only to then say that his poetic naturalism pretty much cannot not be wrong (yet he cannot prove it) but rests in the fact that it is a safe middle ground. Meh..then again, I am a layperson, maybe I got it wrong.

Meh..as a layperson this can be above my pay grade, however, I am also suspicious of anyone who claims they have it all figured out. Carroll's poetic naturalism seems to fit his narrative a little too nicely. Will continue, but I am so far unconvinced, and more convinced that he is just upset that he couldn't move a piece of paper with his mind when a child...

100 pages in and I’m sure there must’ve been some changes (density related, read mush) in my brain for good or for worse !

On my 3rd go .... such a great book! Though I think I should stop after this.

I got about 86% through this and I'm enjoying it so damn much I restarted.. listening to it slower to take it all in again... I'm shocked by how smart people can be.. it's like a 17hr documentary.. so good.

I love Sean Carroll! He's able to make terrible complex ideas so easy to comprehend.

The way he's explaining things make it seem like all these fancy theories and terms are reall y common sense with big words. Bassian theory, prior credences...really you have an idea, the idea gets adjusted by new information and you come to a new updated understanding. I think all scientists must be philosophers.

Entropy, and other ideas are being spoken of in words that the rest of us can understand, but it is still requiring a lot of thinking!
