Over the past decade I have started to paint coral trees, jacarandas, bougainvilleas and Illawarra flame trees, and think maybe it has something to do with ageing, and a growing awareness of the passing of season. As a young man, I eschewed such subjects, dismissing anything floral as pretty or sentimental; but now I eagerly anticipate their annual displays.
