Mostly been skimming this one at this point. K’s father was a super important part of his life but I think I’ve heard enough about him. Lowrie’s scholarship is respectable to say the least. He knows his stuff a bit too well. I’ve learned a lot from him and I’m happy with that but this one drags most of the time. The English is quite dated too. “Majority” for “maturity” like an old Kant translation.

This book has been helpful for grasping Kierkegaard. Interesting to compare Lowrie with Hannay. The former is more committed to Kierkegaard’s ethics and preserving their religious form. Hannay seems more secular in how he encourages people to approach him. Lowrie is very clear that K wants us to live the ethical life. Hannay doesn’t have a clear position on this. Lowrie is also pleasantly down to earth in style.
