And would you look at that, the progress I was asking for. Finally he’s acting like a man and a brave king. Goodness gracious. No he’s seeming honorable and brave and strong as his supposed training and such has crafted. He’s seeming like he’s becoming worth his salt now and he best keep it up.
I can’t tell if it’s stale characters or strung out character development, but now I have some hope.

We’ve HEARD so far that he’s strong, talented and all the things, but from what I’ve seen after the first chapter he hasn’t really shown that to be true. It’s like we’ve been fed info about the character we were supposed to get then got instead his much younger, ill equipped not yet matured brother.
The history and scenery are done well enough though… so…
I’ll call it a night.

And if Svanhilde doesn’t end up wielding a sword at some point and being a sort of warrior maiden, then that’s a giant shame considering her continued interest in it thus far and how strong bold and brave she is. Shes a good character. She’s willing to ruin her life for her brother (though HE SHOULDN’T ASK HER TOO) and she won’t take any baloney from anyone. Not a single one.

As well as during his travels with the woman and her daughter. If the threat was so bad that in two days her place was attacked by MULTIPLE armed men that killed all of her men (but somehow she and this man-child killed them off), how did all of the sudden the threat no longer exist once they left and they had easy travels to the “Ting Assembly” thing.
Nope. Not buying much of this.

OOOOH!!!! NOT TO MENTION!!!! He freaking should’ve DIED when he was lost to the sea, but somehow after being saved for like TWO minutes he no longer has a frozen body that he can’t move and no longer has physical issues with his gaping throat and cheek wound from when his throat was literally slit. His rescue and survival is so unbelievable and could’ve been done better.

And somehow now Ragnvald is nothing and everyone trusts the evil (illegitimate) new king who has proven to not be worth his salt. He keeps losing citizens because they find better and less demanding evil kings to live under and he can’t “hold the land” he keeps saying he is and thus giving him the rights to it.
I had high hopes for this book. I’ll continue in hopes of redemption but oof.

I also Cannot stand how he basically means nothing to anyone when he was literally the kings son and the king was apparently a good one (yet even our main Ragnvald hated his dad FOR DYING and “abandoning them” because he was MURDERED by his best friend/ the current evil king.

I WILL say that the author has done a great job making me HATE the villains. So there’s that for what it’s worth. It seems so far she good at making me hate oriole but care for them. I’ve also successfully predicted a few plots in this book and while it feels nice at first, it gets old after so many times.

With all said, so much has already happened in this book. I have laughed some and I have been joyful at movements, but I’m waiting for some SERIOUS growth to happen in Ragnvald and for me to have any care in the world for what happens to anyone and everyone and even what happens in the story.

Sure justice needs to be done, but he’s done essentially nothing to serve and protect the people and to serve and protect the justice that he wines and cries about being his right to do as the rightful King. He’s earned nothing and I’m waiting to find reason to like him and to see that he is in fact a man and a man worthy enough to be King rather than riding on the backs of everyone else.

He is acting like a child and willing and actively in the works of ruining other people lives just to make his hurts and his place known. Hes not considering anybody else and the threats to their livelihood as well.

It was good for the first few chapters but now I’m thoroughly annoyed. I am getting so annoyed by the main character and I can’t care about him. Hes just a winey little boy who has this big manhood to claim that he simply hasn’t earned yet. Yes he did a few great dead’s by saving a woman and her daughter twice and being honest, but he’s acting impulsive and selfish about everything. I can’t stand him.
