ngl I can predict the plot twist before it happens it's quite easy to see & not really hidden well it makes the character of Wolfgang seem quite dense though I understand that he's been ravaged quite a lot both mentally & physically but when the obviously suspicious actions compound it creates an aggravation to see a character ignore what the reader is seeing & it's hard to feel attuned to the characters emotions

I still somewhat prefer VHD mostly for the diverse fiction pot that Kikuchi has crafted as his world but with VHD there's a bit too much in the creative sandbox of material

there's a more grounded element of Vampire Hunting and it's got an earthily mortal limitation in the character or the implements of the world still fantasy so there's a mystique but there's a bit more punch when it comes to those tense situations

currently been waning off the Vampire fever as I go more into more aberrant horror but I have to say I still find an attraction in Wolfgang wether its the lesions of injury marked on him and the cutthroat ingenuity marked by claustrophobic danger pressing against the wall and the surrounding gothic architecture when writhing in a maggot-infested dungeon surviving by a hairs breath

a protagonist riding by the skin of his teeth in terms of endurance and provisions makes the evading and ingenuity at the brink of deathly danger gripping I also like how the author doesn't neglect the mental endurance of the character and weaves emotionally logical fuel to keep him going

in this way it tends to feel more organic for me at least

After indulging in Vampire Hunter D for a long time I have to say Wolfgang’s more mortal protagonist is quite refreshing

The chaotic mayhem of a town on fire and people raving mad the contrast of their lives changing so suddenly and so fiercely leaving them hollow and with a sense of detachment was painted well

The moral decision in Chapter III was nice too a contrast from the evil eglaseon in prologue
