I sympathize w/ the spirit of the sturdy old heathen who said to the priests who were trying to convert him that he would rather stick to his own gods and go to hell w/ his warrior ancestors than sit down to feast in heaven w/ their starveling band of Christians. That is how I feel about Yankees; I would rather be wrong w/ Lee & his glorious army than right w/ fanatics that plunder & oppress us in the name of liberty

[Author's father] was right when he said that secession was a mistake, and it would be better to have our negroes freed in the Union, if necessary, than out of it, because in that case, it would be done without passion, and violence, and we would get compensation for them- but now the thing is done and there is no use talking about the right or the wrong of it.
