On Matthew 6:
“The heirs of heaven are much better than the fowls of heaven. Now He that feeds His birds will surely not starve His babies.” Matthew Henry
“Hang upon these fair flowers as the busy bee ‘till you have sucked some sweet meditation out of them.” John Trapp

Loving the way Johnson weaves together the attributes, priming us for a right, useful understanding of simplicity. Also of note:
Johnson treats the attributes by way of contrast (rather than seeking out weak comparisons like Grudem). Even a “communicable” attribute like love is, in God, far beyond me when considered alongside His omnipotence. I have to worship, rather than reflect on the shadow that is my love.

“Take occasion to come into His presence on purpose to have communion with Him. . . When thou comest into His presence, be telling Him still how well thou lovest Him; labour to abound in expressions of that kind, than which. . . theres is nothing more taking with the heart of any friend.”

Owen’s Paterology (Theology of the Father) is unsurpassed:
“The Father’s love is the firm foundation from whence all other sweetnesses flow. . . Let, then, this be the saints’ first notion of the Father—as one full of eternal, free love towards them. . . Sit down a little at the fountain, and you will quickly have a farther discovery of the sweetness of the streams.”

Great brief exposition of WLC 11, which is a useful summary of proofs for the Godhood of Father, Son, and Spirit.
The heavy quoting does leave one’s head spinning a bit.

There is nothing in him but what may ravish our affections…he hath nothing in him which can be a proper object of contempt, no defects or shadow of evil; there is infinite excellency to charm us, and infinite goodness to allure us; the author of our beings, the benefactor of our lives…He is the most lovely object, therefore to be studied, therefore to be honoured, therefore to be followed.

“Where there is a ‘true and lively sense of God’s attributes, there is bred in a man’s heart a love, awe, and confidence in God… so far as we imitate God in His goodness, love, justice, mercy, patience, and other attributes, so far do we know Him.’” (Bayly, The Practice of Piety, p. 26)

Gonna be recording locations of many quotes here. The good ones in these pages were on presumption about who God is and the limitation it places on out study of Him.
