I find Liath to be much easier to relate to than Alain - a young girl with no mother, her family chased by some mysterious force, possessing the secret knowledge and trapped into abusing situation. That makes her story both intriguing and relatable. Besides, I really want to see more of her friendship with Hanna and Ivar, I hope they remain as supporting characters throughout the book.

This book is grounded in the historical Middle Ages deeper than your usual 'sword and magic' fantasy that's only 'inspired by' its romantized version. The prologue was tedious, but the story itself is fine so far.

As is I am a bit torn about this book. I like the world building and the story, while nothing special, so far is also well executed but on the other hand the plot seems to progress at a glacial rate and I really, really hope that the two main characters develop a bit more initiative soon because as is they (and their actions) area bit boring.

This book is a hidden gem! Picked it up because I was pleasantly surprised to see an older fantasy series (1990s) written by a woman. Started off with a bang, and I haven't really been able to put it down. It's such a pleasure discovering this new world where there is actually no racism and no sexism.
