There's a lot of setup going on but it feels rather static and exposition-heavy, and I'm getting bogged down (and being a slow reader isn't helping matters, either). A review or two said that things pick up in Part II, so I'll be patient.

Playing the nice guy after being the stalker-y mean guy for months. Creep.

100 pages in, and it feels like we've barely scratched the surface of context and characters. Yep, this is gonna be a long-hauler. :D

I have a hunch that Alain is not gonna be stuck in the monastery for the whole series.

I have all these books near my desk, and it is quite an intimidating amount of reading (for me). There's no guarantee that I'll finish this series in the next five years, or at all for that matter, but I'm at the very least interested in giving the first couple of books a fair chance.
