wow, so far this book speaks to my SOUL about life, (over-)consumption, the rat race of working 40 hours a week, etc.

What are my desires trying to get me to notice? "Ask if creativity rather than consumption might best fill [your desire]" (184).

This book is awesome! Having a break while I return it to the library and rejoin the wait list to finish.

I'm not comfortable talking about what I earn or save. Perhaps an instance of Rachel Hollis's "I Need to Make Myself Smaller" and shame around not measuring up to my peers. I prefer talking about wise and enjoyable frugality over my income and expenses.

So far this is boring nonsense, wastes of time, and upselling marketing about a book I'm already trying to read. I don't get it.

So far it's just been selling me on how amazing the book will be, selling me on how amazing the book will be, and selling me on how amazing the book will be. And a book that's supposedly that amazing shouldn't need to sell me on it when I'm already reading it, especially not three times.

To be successful, cultivate positive attitudes of self-respect, pride in your contribution to your workplace, dedication to your job, cooperation with your employers and your coworkers, desire to do the job right, personal integrity, responsibility and accountability - and do it because you value your life energy.

I love the respect the authors have for leisure, unpaid work, and “me time”: “Even our language betrays us by calling it ‘time off’ as though leisure were just a few minutes of recuperation before we’re back ‘on.’”

"There are two sides to the coin of living beyond your means. The shiny side is that you can have everything you want right now. The tarnished side is that you will pay for it with your life." (Since money = life hours)

"Frugality, by focusing on 'enough' rather than 'more,' can actually be one of the truest ways to be green. The amount of stuff you buy is strongly correlated with your impact on nature."

"Keep this in mind as we explore ways to save money. We aren't talking about being cheap, making do or being a... tightwad. We're talking about creative frugality, a way of life in which you get the maximum fulfillment for each unit of life energy spent."

"If we are enjoying an item, whether or not we own it, we're being frugal. For many of life's pleasures it may be far better to 'use' something than to 'possess' it (and pay in time and energy for the upkeep)." I think this author is a minimalist and just doesn't know it.

I love that this book is not just about finances but also about life philosophy and how finance is just one aspect of your life--not something you want to be your whole life but also not something you want to be ignorant of.

I'm not sure how I feel about this book so far. On one hand, it is highly rated and I like a few of the concepts. On the other, Robbins seems to be overly wordy. Repeating the same concept over and over in different words. I don't have a lot of patience for these types of books.

I'm excited to monitor my "energy expenditure". I forget that time, attention, and energy are just as worth tracking as finances.

This place would need to be a site of production rather than a site of consumption. It needed to be a money source, not a money sink; to fill my coffers, not empty them.

Unlike other investments, real estate ties up a lot of your wealth in one investment that is not very liquid; if you are in a hurry to sell to get your money out and the housing market is weak, you might lose.

If there are a few simple rules to remember from the Bogleheads, it’s the following:
- Pay off debt and avoid it in the future.
- Live below your means by spending less than you earn.
- Invest the rest in low-cost index funds.
- Hold on to funds for many years.

Understand your risk tolerance and diversify into stocks, bonds, and domestic and international index funds to reduce your overall risk. Since landing the perfect mix of asset classes is impossible, the most important thing is reducing exposure to one single government or company. Review the expense ratios, or fee, of each fund.
