“…and their sacred ponytails dangling down the inside of their vegetarian skulls.” Are we really criticising people for being vegetarian now?? 😭😭

‘D’you know why God made Hijras (intersex people)?’
‘It was an experiment. He decided to create something, a living creature
that is incapable of happiness. So he made us.’
Love the depiction of the difficult life that intersex people live but why the hell Arundhati thrusts in her political narrative even in her fiction books bruh

Holy shit, went into this nervous because people thought it was so much worse than The God of Small things but I’m in love with this already. The beautiful intro about the near extinction of the white-backed vultures….
and “God’s carotid burst open on the new border of India and Pakistan and a million people died of hatred.” The beautiful way that Roy can tell a story…

Currently on page 52, she really be switching up from god of small things. Except that this time it seems the story’s time span is so much longer.

Finished it again. I finished and started it again since it seemed like I might be a little less lost. Yeah but only a little.

This is not an easy read. Yet it is one of the best books I have read. I have learned so much. The history of Delhi, it speaks of love and war& diversity. Every character came with a great story. I’m fascinated! I look forward to reading her memoir.. I am a lover of hard cover books and I will patiently wait for a more affordable copy. Cheers to Arundhati Roy for such a remarkable book!

A bit different to god of small things. I can kind of see why some people in the comment don’t like this book. But it’s a very progressive subject that’s being mentioned in the book along with the theme between struggle of separation of Pakistan and India

Does anyone else feel that Roy is sickly sentimental? The writing is good, nothing outstanding (I haven't read God of Small tho). And sometimes, her insights are quite fascinating. She's constructing an ancient city like Delhi with its sprawling panorama, its disparate people. And ofc the political turmoil around Kashmir too. But the execution is just too saccharine for my taste 🙄 don't love picking this up

"a tubby old Gandhian, former-soldier-turned-village-social-worker, who had announced a fast to the death to realize his dream of a corruption-free India. He lay fatly on his back with the air of an ailing saint, against a backdrop of a portrait of Mother India – a many-armed goddess with a map-of-India-shaped body. (Undivided British India, of course, which included Pakistan and Bangladesh.)"

She drew a lucky straw. She had a pretty grave with wildflowers growing around it and her mother close by.
