In love with Fiona's backstory 🫠🥀

From the very first page, I could tell this is going to be a good one. I love the writing style, like the character’s thoughts are just spilling from her mind like rushing water ( which the story centers on). I can already tell this story is going to be beautifully heartbreaking and tragically deep.

OML, the imagery:
"He had dropped a large orange into my open hand and told me that was how much brain a person lost when they had Alzheimer’s. I thought about that. The size of an orange cored right out of you."

Had to read this sentence thrice to understand Gretel was talking to her mum, and not Roger.
The actual quote:
I tried to see the imprint of Marcus on him. Do you remember the way he looked? Taller than you with hunched shoulders, that dark bowl haircut and anxious eyes. You used to say that I had the same eyes as him, a bit heavy around the lids, lined before our time. One of the children spoke loudly at my elbow.

Yay! I've reached the creepy part(s) of the story 🎆

Thank goodness for the plot, because the parts where she (Gretel) is recalling searching for her mum were not interesting to me.
I think I have finished the flashback parts, because it feels like we are back in the present 👍🏼

Started crying on page 3. Might be the book. Might be my period. tbd.
