He means by this that, though theoretical physics is now beyond our ability to deduce from our experience, a creative mind can find mathematical connections and seek the simplest answers.

The beautiful and terrifying truth being that no one can prove the universe is truly simple under the hood—we just feel it and hope it!

The first essay, actually a speech for Planck’s birthday in Berlin, is already lovely: praise of people who love science for the same reasons artists love art. I would be much happier accosting physicists at parties if more of them cared about these deeper purposes. Einstein isn’t cool because he’s a “genius”, he’s cool because he read, wrote, and cared about the world!
