Louisiana politicians, for all their faults, are also a bunch of nerds; on the US bicentennial, they were debating what our state fossil should be. For more seemingly useless trivia, like "what's a bryozoan colony?" Read this great, accessible book.

I love this book. It is like walking through the bayous and fields of Louisiana with a friend who happens to be an expert in flora and fauna. The author has a conversation with the readers and never gets preachy about conservation. If only other conservationists were like Kelby. I'm savoring each vignette.
