'The mission of the true art lover should be to reduce the relative importance of museums, in the sense that the wisdom and insight currently collected there shouldn't be so jealously guarded and fetishized, but instead scattered generously and promiscuously across life.' p.88

Growth occurs when we discover how to remain authentically ourselves in the presence of potentially threatening things. Maturity is the possession of coping skills: we can take in our stride things that previously would have knocked us off course. We are less fragile, less easily shocked and hence more capable of engaging with situation as they really are.

We hunger for artworks that will compensate for our inner fragilities and help return us to viable means. We call a work beautiful when it supplies the virtue we are missing, and we dismiss as ugly one that forces on us moods or motifs that we feel either threatened or already overwhelmed by. Art holds out the promise of inner wholeness.

We may have a tendency to be too complacent, or too insecure; too trusting, or too suspicious; too serious, or too light-hearted. Art can put us in touch with concentrated doses of our missing dispositions, and thereby restore a measure of equilibrium to our listing inner selves.

One of the unexpectedly important things that art can do for us is teach us how to suffer more successfully …. We need help in finding honor in some of our worst experiences, and art is there to lend them a social expression.

The more difficult our lives, the more a graceful depiction of a flower might move us. The tears -if they come - are in response not to how sad the image is, but how pretty.

I love this book! It gets me inspired to paint again! It gives me a reason to make art! I plan to purchase this for my library when I have the money.
