This is because the sacrament of confirmation is to strengthen and ready the believer for spiritual battle and they require a mentor to guide their use of their new spiritual weapons and armor. Sad to think how for many it's become cultural

Read about how the seven sacraments were instituted for seven reasons, each sacrament consists of matter (the element(s) used) and form (the words used), the accompanying ceremonies for each sacrament do not affect their validity but can be occasions for sin for those who omit them or do not properly follow them outside of emergency situations, and the sinfulness of the minister has no effect on the sacrament itself.
