Finished the Roots. Wow.

Kind of depressing so far? I like the continuing theme of trees through all of the stories, but as a whole it mostly feels very sad! Interested to see if that changes at all.

This book! I cried on page 10. Page 10! Also, this: “He’s sure his parents must be worried sick. But the only sane thing to do is to curl up in the car and sleep for a couple of hours until everything blows over and the plows catch up with God’s shit fit.”

I have no idea what is happening

Every new section keeps knocking the wind right out of me. I keep gasping and sighing at the layers this story has. Really marvelous and hard to put down.

this might be one of the best books I’ve read in a long time

No offense to my book club but I think some of us are reading this on a different level and I’m looking forward to discussing so #lockin

Made so much progress but decided to give up at page 247. The organizational structure is brilliant and parts are beautifully written. There's too many characters and it gets less engaging.

Very well written. Cleverly done. Explores our relationship with nature as well as environmental activism.

Now that I have gotten through part 1, I really hope the book will pick up the pace🤞

Moving quicker than I expected

Unfortunately it’s moving too slowly for me right now, so it’s a DNF. Willing to pick it up again later though

The Patrica Westerford is probably my favorite portion of this book so far! Wow! (Also loved the first story with American Chestnuts)

finally starting this one
I think many authors tend to portray characters as just their current role (ie parent characters as unrelatable adults, child characters as dumb babies), but powers is good at writing a story that covers characters from birth to death then seamlessly moving to the next generation with characters that seem real

I’m never going to finish this book. 🫠 It’s nice, but like . . . that’s kind of all. And I freaking love trees.

Weeks later my audiobook hold came through at the library to save this from the Did not finish pile 😤

Sprawling story about environmental collapse and what humans should do in response and understand as their place in the world. Would have benefitted from some judicious editing and cutting. The last 20 pages in particular don’t seem to add much.

My Libby loan is expiring so I guess I’ll pick it up again in three weeks
