this book asks a lot of it’s reader - but it rewards richly the time spent with it

This guy just keeps on amazing me! 4th of 5 quintets just rolls out science in line after line and it's so easy to grasp.

Just starting with the 4th of the quintets. The 3rd followed what I'll call the political history of the Western world through centuries of its history. Systems, leaders, wars, peace efforts. So much material! How does he do this?! The threads that he weaves show a simple, still evolving forward motion without ignoring the cost and pain. His knowledge is astounding, his use of it more so.

So wish I'd had this for European history! Much better treatment of all that.

Quintet 2 read. Interesting final words of this portion. Economic theories and their proponents focus of this quintet member. The range is broad, ranging from what is now called left, right and center. Or something similar to that. Some familiar names, some not. Never imagined that economics could be a subject presented in this manner, especially after a couple of intro level courses in school.

Working harder with this quintet. I'm not as familiar with his choices or some (most) of the history. I must've snoozed thru industrial revolution era in class. And avoided Dickens novels. Just coming into early 20th century now. Don't miss the portion dealing with Marx. No prisoners taken on either side.

Just finished first of five. Like meeting history and ideas as they happened. And his choices cover a lot of ground along the way. Worth reading.

I do so like this poet's work, his breadth and depth. He included an introduction to this, and I find it extremely helpful. I can understand what he is saying. Most of the time, and for those times, a reread generally clears things up. No, I'm not as knowledgeable as needs be for this, but I'm learning along the way. I'll be on this one for a while, and that's good.

absolutely brilliant and gently challenging. if you are willing to spend time with confounding poems that teach you how to read them, then this is a very rewarding read
