His stomach trembled? HIS STOMACH TREMBLED?!
God, that's like a "she smiled with her lower teeth" line!

“You call Junior Del,” she said instead of giving a direct answer. “Why is that?”
“Because that’s who he is to me. I like having something special to call him. He’s special to me.”
LOLOLOL - if that isn't the biggest lie of the century. (It was actually because he didn't want to call him either Bacon or Delbert in bed.)

"being a warm bulk to lean on, both figuratively and literally"
I AM FUCKING SCREAMING! 😂
Like, it was a total coincidence, but for real, with as much as I make fun of Kent for this, of COURSE it's gonna come up in the first new full-length Albert book I read since getting into Kent.

Finally got to the super emotional part that made me need to listen to the whole book ASAP. I wanna say poor Del, and it's true, but my ambivalent and less than fully educated feelings about the "war on terror" also make that hard. I suppose no matter what, he was in a shit situation.

Once again, it's nice to get back to books with perfectly healthy levels of jealousy - the "I know who you're going home with tonight, and I appreciate you having boundaries with others". Unhinged jealousy isn't my favorite trope in dark romance, and unfortunately it seems to be ubiquitous in the genre.

"Damn Spencer for being here. Damn this assignment for keeping him from his team. Damn the LT for not putting him on Team Alpha. Damn his stupid motherfucking finger for refusing to heal properly the first time. Damn the whole fucking world to hell."

"A strange sort of anger unfurled in his gut, as intense as it was irrational. Damn Spencer for being here. Damn this assignment for keeping him from his team. Out of context quotes:
"All he knew was that somewhere out there he'd come to care about [b]acon."
"His only coherent thought: what about [b]acon?"

This is an interesting (if not exactly novel) conversation from my non-absolutist pacifist perspective. The idea of finding peace in being an efficient killer in the military because it allows you to protect your teammates (and the mission) only goes so far as one’s ability to believe the mission is worth the loss of human lives in the first place. One still (nominally) opts into the military, and thus its missions.

At 29%, and the emotions are starting to hit. And honestly, as much of a fan girl as I am for the world Kent writes, Albert really is the better writer (I say as if they're the only two MM authors).

Made the mistake of poking around in the latter half of this one, and in true Annabeth Albert fashion, the emotions are on point (almost getting Resilient Heart level feels here), so I guess I'm getting yet another detour in my June TBR. Though it's gonna be hard to go back to the beginning and not keep going from where I am (72%).
