While I’m reading this novel, one question keeps popping into my head: what would make a girl in her twenties fall for—or get emotionally attached to—a thirty-year-old gay man who’s married to someone of the same sex, shallow, completely worthless, doesn’t feel anything for her, probably doesn’t even know she exists, and doesn’t share anything with her—not religion, not values, not anything at all

Unbelievable. I feel like I’ve seen this story play out in real life.
It reminded me of that girl who was in love one-sidedly with that book-obsessed guy with a red beard, who was married to someone of the same sex, a Black guy, and who was basically obsessed with Japanese culture.
