Cool. The book is starting now...

The preservation of life no doubt basically stems from an enormously patient, hesitant effort, something everyone pushes themselves to do, keeping an eye on themselves on the difficult path of perseverance. Life probably couldn't continue without a painstakingly-maintained worldwide conspiracy.

I used to enjoy disappearing into leafy avenues at twilight, that advance guard that thrusts into the city's threatened heart (because one day the city will be conquered by trees).

Passing through a forest is the only way I've ever imagined of getting to a mythical country. After that it's as if the scene is cleansed, becomes other, as if the open fields twinkle more lovingly in the faint light that rises beyond the twilight of branches.
