The mystery is good and really pulling me along. But I don’t know how to feel about the fact that torturing people is part of the MCs job! Sure, he hates it…but if he’s as generally a kind and principled person as he is shown to be, I feel like he should be more psychologically messed up by this!!

I’m fascinated by the way “executioner” is treated like a separate caste in this time and place. People are excited to go to a hanging or beheading, but not only won’t they look the hangman in the eye or hang out with him, his whole family is treated as unclean, so that executioner’s children generally have to marry each other. AND his job extends to cleaning up refuse in the street!
