honestly I did NOT sufficiently appreciate Kitty’s wonderful prosaicness on previous reads

This is really witty (but dated) historical rom-com with outrageous characters that make me laugh. I love Freddie the sweet unwitting fake fiance so much. He is a happy man about town and gets drawn into the most ridiculous plots by his uncle's ward Kitty. She is a smart country girl trying London for the first time and her insights on the experiences are charming.

Kitty naive, Freddy kind and they need to be truly engaged !

Plot is getting complicated as Kitty befriends
two non-Ton ladies: Olivia (beauty who Jack has eye on for “petticoat line”) and Miss Plympton sp? Dolph’s true pick.
And Freddy is concerned about Chevalier (Kitty’s only relative, French) who though has address may be only a cardshark w/no good intentions towards Kitty.

Don’t remember this plot .. but it’s interesting now.

Miss Kitty has now been taken to London (under duress) by her fake fiancée Freddy Standen the only great-nephew that will help her get away from her boring country life. He is a dapper dandy but a good fellow and although he get coerced into Kitty's scheme he hold up his end. His father suspects right away things are not what they seem but keeps quiet to see how this plot will play out.

Historical romance with witty dialogue and interesting period characters. Miss Kitty Charing, adopted daughter of very rich Mr Penicuik is made aware she will be left penniless if she doesn't marry one of great-nephews. If she does she will get his entire fortune. She has no skills or way to earn an living and she also doesn't want to marry - except for love.

Lots of characters to keep track of it feels like. Would not recommend reading this book right before bed or when super tired. Otherwise, it is witty, and has caused me to laugh out loud at times even. Very clean, innocent romance with a similar vibe as pride and prejudice.

“What I mean is, like you to have everything you want. Wished it was me, and not Jack, that’s all.”

Meg & Freddy’s bickering feel like real siblings

There’s nothing overtly romantic about this scene where Freddy teaches Kitty to dance but my god it is to me

I love him 😭 I see why others do too. “…no hostess, presenting him to the plainest damsel in the room, had the smallest fear that he would excuse himself, or abandon his partner at the earlier opportunity.” “…and he was always nice to a fault in every attention to her comfort. Nor was the most jealous husband suspicious of him.”

The father is the best. I get the impression he is very mellow. Very cool and collected. Very intelligent. But loves even more watching his foolish son do something silly that will probably entertain him. It’s like a bemused adult watching a teenager trying to sneak out their window

Freddy isn’t the smartest or most eloquent of love interests, but he’s so sweet. Literally the embodiment of a golden retriever. I love him

Ok I love Freddy’s dad. He’s def on to them but letting them hang themselves haha. Or maybe he sees what I see and that they might be good for one another

I love their dynamic 🥲 even though that aren’t truly super close they act like friends or cousins in the sense of like, uh but you’ll prob do something stupid & I’ll get the blame 😂

The dynamic reminds me a lot of Friday’s child

I love how generally kind Freddy. He doesn’t accept her money to hold with the scheme of then making it so she doesn’t know how expensive London. He doesn’t do it to better his chances. He just does that cause he genuinely wants Kitty to enjoy herself

Even though Freddy is not the guy kitty has a crush on, immediately I can tell they’re perfect for each other. I wouldn’t want to be with either, but they’re good together

Off the bat this is already one of her more humorous book. Up there with Grand Sophy

Heyer continues to challenge my vocabulary, but I'm trying to embrace the opportunity to make use of a dictionary. ;-)

The male characters are interesting in this book. Only one man comes across as "normal".
