It could be a problem with me, but I found it hard to get the deeper meaning beneath Hemingway’s economical, spare prose. I could however get a feel for an extremely poignant story. Hopefully For Whom the Bell Tolls scratches my itch better.

Los que habían pescado tiburones los habían llevado a la factoría de tiburones al otro lado de la ensenada, donde eran izados en aparejos de polea; les sacaban los hígados, les cortaban las aletas y los desollaban y cortaban su carne en trozos para salarla.
ah bueno 😃

The Old Man dozed off once he fell onto his bed. The boy came to the shack and checked on him. He left and came back with some coffee for the old man. Santigo woke up. He didn't spend a single moment reminiscing about his failure and started talking about his future plan with the boy. As the coprse of the fish swung in the harbour, the old man was dreaming about the lions.

Only the carcass and the head of the fish were left. The glow of Havana came into view. The Old man stopped thinking, he just focused on steering the boat back to the harbour. He pulled the boat up, shouldered the mast and started walking back home. His tiredness stroke him once he started climbing. He had to take a couple of breaks before he reached his shack.

At midnight, the sharks came in a pack, gouging the fish incessantly. There was not much the man could do. He beat them with his club. But something seized it, and it was gone. He picked up the tiller and swung at them. It broke, the old man lunged at the shark that was biting the head with the splintered butt, driving it in. It let go and rolled away.

Reading The Old Man and the Sea, 14th Day.
Not long after, a shovelnose shark appeared. The old man did the same thing. But this time around, when the shark jerked backwards, the knife blade snapped. Two more galanos emerged after sunset. The old man used his club to hit their noses and brains, driving them away. But after they slid down from the fish, one of the sharks was seen still circling the skiff.

Two Galanos appeared behind the wake of the fish, the old man steadied himself and picked up his oar with the knife, punching it into the brain of the sharks. One of the sharks locked its jaw onto the fish. But the old mantwisted the blade in the jaw to loosened it. Both sharks fell behind and sank into the ocean.

As the skiff sailed with the fish lashed alongside. The scent of the carcass was caught by a shark, which emerged from the sea. As the shark drew closer to the stern, the old man readied his harpoon and rammed it down into the shark's brain. The shark swung over and over, sinking into the ocean. But that wouldn't be the last one, he thought. And a bad time was coming.

He dropped the line, put his foot on it and lifted the harpoon as high as possible, sinking it into the fish's heart. The fish came alive and jumped over the skiff with all its energy. After that, it lay sideways on the discoloured sea. The old man drank some water to clear his head. Then he fastened the fish alongside the skiff and stepped the mast, finally heading home.

The old man rigged his harpoon and readied himself to pull the fish alongside. He started pulling, but every time the fish was pulled partway over, it righted itself and swam away. The old man could feel himself go every time he tried to pull it in. He told himself repeatedly that he would try one more time. It took all his strength, and the fish finally came over.

The fish had stopped swimming against the current and the old man knew it would start circling soon. He decided to eat the other flying fish to regain some strength. The sun was rising for the third time when the fish started to circle. The old man felt faint and dizzy due to his fatigue. But he told himself to endure, then he saw the fish was thirty feet away from him.
