Status Updates From Reflection

I’m enjoying this. I wouldn’t of otherwise picked this up, but it’s our book club pick for AAPI month. I wasn’t really interested in picking up the Disney twisted tales books, but I’m glad this is my first, because I love Mulan. I’m considering checking out other books from this series, hence why I just added them to my tbr. Though they’re not currently priority.

I was getting ready to be mad at the end of this book. But it was fine.

This book was slow moving but I got through it. I don’t particularly care for underworld stories. I feel like I learned more about the cultural understanding of the underworld.

After defeating the fire demon and making it out of that area, the gang makes it to Youdu. They’re running out of time to make it to the hundredth floor, but ghosts tell Mulan that the Chamber of Mirrors may be her best shot.

That chamber is where Mulan had to go alone to face her self and really realize who she is as a person. If she didn’t face herself, she’d be stuck in the underworld forever.

Mulan and the gang fought the fire demon, Huoguai, to try to get to the next level of Diyu. The strong demon put up a fight, and he tried taking Mulan down with him into the River of Hopelessness, but Shang used pillars to try to save her. The pillars broke though and now what’s going to happen to Mulan?

Mulan and the gang end up in this realm that had a huge volcano. It was sending flying rocks and fire into the atmosphere.

The sword that Mulan got earlier is the Sword of the Blazing Sun which can easily take out the demons that are fighting her on the volcano.

It seems like these are all distractions to prevent Mulan from leaving Diyu.

The fox turns out to be working with the lady of forgetfulness. She gives Mulan tea and gives her the life she wanted, (her parents being proud) but it’s all fake.

Shang and ShiShi come to save her, and at first Mulan forgets but she eventually comes to her senses. She gets out of the illusion, Shang apologizes, and they find a door to the 97th floor.

Mulan runs into her ancestors and they assist her and Shang to a portal that will take them higher up. They weren’t convinced that she’s actually Ping.

This strikes some doubt in Shang, so when they go through the forest he questions who she really is. Mulan finally tells him, but her lying upset Shang and he leaves her alone to find her own way to Youdou (the city of the dead).

Like Mulan, I too don’t feel ready to say goodbye to Diyu.

ShiShi sacrificed himself to save Mulan and Shang on the Mountain of Knives. After that, the two soldiers make their way to the top of the mountain where there’s grass and not knives in the ground.

Mulan and Shang have a touching moment at the top, but Mulan still doesn’t tell Shang who she really is. Shang tells her how he’s looking for an intelligent girl, and not someone who just likes him for his name.

Mulan, Shang, and Shi shi encounter this old lady who went by Lao Lao, she was really Meng Po who is the person that causes spirits to forget their past life.

Once Mulan figured out who she was, she tried escaping with everyone. Meng Po sent her demons to get Shang’s spirit and kill Mulan and Shi Shi.

To escape, they climb this mountain of knives and when the demons get close to them Shi Shi sacrificed himself.

Hmmmmm

To quote She’s All That, “Am I a bet? Am I a f-ing bet?”

Prolonged start, but it’s finally getting really good

Mulan saw Shang’s dad in the bamboo realm, and the dad tells her where she can find Shang. Then her and ShiShi find Shang w/ the help of his father.

When they are escaping the tower, it breaks down and falls apart which causes the three characters to go deeper into Diyu.

They soon find a pavilion and ShiShi approaches it, but he hears a rustle in the bushes and gets hit in the head by someone.

Mulan II flashbacks

Mulan was able to convince King Yama to let her rescue Shang’s soul. The deal: if she can find his soul and escape Diyu, her, shang, and ShiShi will be able to all leave. However, if she doesn’t rescue him before daytime, she’ll be stuck down in the underworld forever.

FINALLY

Mulan and ShiShi make it to the underworld, and they have to cross this extremely long bridge to get to see King Yama. She meets some ghosts and demons. The demons are the guards to the underworld and they’re taking her to see the King.

Mulan throughout this entire book: 🎶Don’t be suspicious. Don’t be suspicious.🎶

Mulan and Shang make it back to the camp with the rest of the soldiers, and they put Shang in a tent. Mulan is exhausted at this point and falls asleep, in a dreamlike state she sees Shang’s dead father who tells her that Shang will die in the morning. Mulan then asks what she could do to save him. That’s when she is encountered by ShiShi (Shang’s guardian animal) who takes her to the underworld.

It starts with the scene of Mulan and the soldiers at the snowy mountain. Mulan uses a cannon to take out the hun and Shan Yu, but Shang gets hurt in the process bc he protected Mulan while she set the cannon off.

Mulan takes care of Shang while the rest of the soldiers climb back down the mountain. Shang is fully prepared to die from his injuries at this point.

This book suddenly turned into a horror novel

A proper Mulan/Shang team-up, let’s GOOOOOOOO

I can’t take King Yama seriously because every time I read his name, I just think of Yama from Big Hero 6.
